Giving with Dana
MIM’s teachings and meditation retreats are offered on the principle of dana, an ancient Pali word meaning “generosity” or “gift.”

What is Dana?
Dana, in Buddhism, is the practice of giving—often money or material goods—as an act of generosity to support spiritual practitioners, monasteries, or temples. This common practice is vital for spiritual development and extends beyond material gifts to include time, knowledge, and various forms of support.
Dana has been integral to the 2,500-year-old Buddhist tradition, dating back to the Buddha’s time, when teachings were offered freely as a form of dana. Early teachers received no payment, and the lay community generously provided for the basic needs of monks and nuns.
Additionally, dana plays a crucial role in the spiritual life of Dharma practitioners. The act of giving benefits the giver by opening the heart. Simple gestures—like offering a flower, an act of service, or a kind thought—serve as sincere forms of practice.
Teacher Support

While the West lacks a strong monastic tradition, our Insight teachers follow the ancient model of dana (generosity). They do not receive payment from Melbourne Insight Meditation; retreat fees cover only accommodation, food, management, and the teacher’s airfare. Financial support comes solely from voluntary donations (dana) from students. Many teachers rely almost entirely on dana. Please remember that they invest significant time serving the dharma and have living expenses like rent, transport, and education. During events, there will be a dana box for cash or cheque contributions. Teachers’ PayPal and bank details are in their bio, and all amounts are welcome.
